Cars with a gasoline engine
Required tools and fixtures: 16 mm spark plug wrench.
To replace worn parts, you need: spark plugs of the appropriate specification.
Removing
The engine should be cold or slightly warm.
Cars with 16-valve engine (2.0 liters)
1. Remove the stiffening arm attached above the upper suspension strut mounts.
2. Unscrew the bolts 1 and 2, which secure the upper protective cover of the engine (see illustration).
9.2 Unscrew the bolts 1 and 2, which secure the upper protective cover of the engine
3. Unscrew seven bolts of fastening of coils of ignition 2 and remove coils (see illustration).
9.3 Unscrew the seven bolts securing the ignition coils 2 and remove the coils
4. Vehicles with a 1.4-/1.6-liter petrol engine (K4J/K4M). Disconnect ignition coils.
5. All models except K4J/K4M. Remove the high voltage wires from the spark plugs (see arrows in illustration). When removing lugs, pull on the lugs, not the wires.
9.S Remove high voltage wire lugs from spark plugs (see arrows). All models except K4J/K4M
6. Remove the spark plugs with a spark plug wrench and inspect them. With some experience, the type of candle can be used to judge the condition of the engine.
If the electrodes and insulator are dark gray or light brown, this indicates normal operation of the engine and spark plug. If they are black, then the air-fuel mixture is too rich. The light gray color of the electrodes and the spark plug insulator indicates a poor air-fuel mixture supplied to the combustion chambers. If the spark plugs are coated with oil, then there is a misfire or poor condition of the piston rings. In this case, the compression should be checked.
7. Check the spark plug insulators for leakage currents. Leakage currents manifest themselves as thin, uneven traces on the surface of the plug. In this case, replace the spark plug, and also check the tightness of the high-voltage wire tip on the spark plug. Replace tip if necessary.
Installation
8. Clean the spark plug threads with a clean rag.
9. Screw in the candles by hand until they touch the cylinder head.
Attention! Do not skew candles.
10. Tighten the spark plugs with a spark plug wrench to 25 Nm.
Attention! If a torque wrench is not available, then tighten the screwed-in new spark plugs with a spark plug wrench by about 1/4 turn. Tighten the old candles in the same way, but only by about 15". Spark plugs that are too tight may break when they are removed, or the spark plug threads on the cylinder head may be damaged. If the threads are damaged, use the UTC repair kit or Heli-Coil.
11. All models except K4J/K4M. Put high voltage wire ends on the spark plugs.
12. Vehicles with a 1.4-/1.6-liter petrol engine (K4J/K4M). Install the ignition coils
13. Cars with a 16-valve engine (2.0 liters). Replace the ignition coils, the engine top cover and the stiffening arm between the upper shock strut mounts.
