  • General description of automatic transmission

1. The transmission consists of a torque converter, an assembly of epicyclic gears, hydraulically driven clutches and brakes, and an electronic control unit (see illustration).

1.1. Automatic transmission device.

1.1. Automatic transmission device.

2. The torque converter ensures the engagement of the engine with the transmission, as well as the change of gear ratios during acceleration.

3. The engagement of reverse gear or one of the four forward gears is carried out depending on which of the components of the epicyclic gear assembly is held stationary (using brakes and clutches) or rotates. The transmission pump provides the hydraulic pressure necessary for the operation of the brakes and clutches.

4. Pulses supplied by switches and sensors connected to the transmission throttle and gear selector rods are analyzed in an electronic device that determines the gear ratio and controls the operation of the transmission. The device activates electromagnetic valves that alternately open or close hydraulic channels, causing the clutches and brakes to engage or release the corresponding components of the gear assembly. The command sent to the transmission by the electronic unit can be "overridden" by moving the drive mode selection lever to the desired position, after which one or another gear will be held regardless of the engine speed.

5. The transmission fluid is cooled by passing through a special cooler mounted on top of the transmission.

6. Due to the complexity of the automatic transmission, any repair or rebuild of the unit should be entrusted to a Renault dealer. In the event of a malfunction, first check the fluid level (Section 1) and adjustment of the gear selection mechanism (Chapter 2).

Note: Some of the following sections require a procedure to confirm full throttle opening using specialized Renault diagnostic equipment. If the necessary equipment is not available, do not attempt this procedure, otherwise the transmission will shift incorrectly. In this case, please consult your Renault dealer.
