Removal

1. Block the front wheels and select reverse (or "P"). Jack up the rear of the car and support it on axle stands. Remove the rear wheel.

2. Using a jack, slightly raise the trailing arm to compress the shock absorber slightly. Remove the lower mounting bolt (see illustration).

10.2. Rear shock absorber lower mounting bolt (marked with an arrow).

10.2. Rear shock absorber lower mounting bolt (marked with an arrow).

3. Unscrew the nut and bolt of the upper mount and remove the shock absorber.

Checking the serviceability

4. Mount the shock absorber in a vise and check it as described in Chapter 5 for the front suspension strut. Also check the rubber cushions for damage. Replace the shock absorber if the cushions are damaged or worn - they cannot be replaced separately. Inspect the mounting bolts for damage or wear and replace if necessary.

Installation

5. Before installing the shock absorber, clamp it vertically in a vice and squeeze it fully several times to "pump" it. Apply a small amount of multipurpose grease to the shock absorber mounting bolts.

6. Place the shock absorber in its working position, then insert its upper mounting bolt and tighten the nut.

7. Install the lower shock absorber mounting bolt, tightening the fastener by hand only. Remove the jack from under the trailing arm.

8. Install the wheel, lower the vehicle to the ground and tighten the wheel bolts to the specified tightening torque Specifications.

9. Rock the vehicle to adjust the position of the shock absorber mounting components, then tighten both mounting bolts to the specified torque Specifications.
