Note: The M4R engine has a dual-circuit cooling system with two thermostats: one on the water pump and one in the water box.


Removal the thermostat from the water pump



Place the vehicle on a lift. Remove the engine oil pan guard.

Drain the fluid from the engine cooling system.

Loosen the clamp (1) on the coolant supply pipe using the pliers with remote grip for elastic clamps (Mot. 1448). Disconnect the hose (2) from the supply pipe.

Remove:
  • bolts (3) for fastening the supply pipe;
  • supply pipe (4);
  • thermostat.

Installing a thermostat on a water pump



Install:
  • thermostat on the water pump in the direction shown in the figure;
  • supply pipe;
  • bolts for fastening the supply pipe.

Tighten the coolant supply pipe mounting bolts to the specified torque of 17 Nm. Connect the coolant supply pipe.



Install the water pump inlet hose clamp.

Fill the engine cooling system with fluid.

Removal the thermostat housing at the outlet of the cylinder head



Remove:
  • engine sump guard mounting bolts;
  • protective screen.

Drain the fluid from the engine cooling system.

Remove the coolant temperature sensor.

Loosen the bolt (1) securing the gearbox breather tube tab. Move the gearbox breather tube bracket (2) to the side.

Remove the clamps (3) securing the cooling system hoses to the thermostat housing.

Disconnect and move aside the cooling system hoses from the thermostat housing.

Disconnect the ball head of the multifunction switch drive cable mount (10) on the gearbox using a clamp.

Release the locking device of the multifunction switch drive cable housing (11) on the gearbox.

Move the gear selector cable to the side.

Remove:
  • thermostat housing mounting bolts (12);
  • thermostat housing;
  • thermostat housing gasket.

When installing, tighten the thermostat housing mounting bolts to the required torque of 25 Nm.

Remove the thermostat (5).

Install all parts in reverse order.
