2. Most of the actions included in this Part are based on the condition that the engine is installed in the vehicle. Therefore, if this information is used when rebuilding an already removed engine, many of the procedures described here can be skipped.
Engine - general description
3. The engine has a 4-cylinder, in-line design with overhead valves, and is mounted transversely at the front of the car (see illustration).
1.3. C series engine (1108 cm1).
4. The cast iron cylinder block has replaceable liners. The crankshaft is secured in the cylinder block by five main bearings. Thrust washers in the central main bearing determine the axial play of the crankshaft.
5. The connecting rods are connected to the crankshaft by means of connecting rod bearings with liners, and to the pistons by means of fixed piston pins. The pistons are made of aluminum alloy and are equipped with three rings, two compression rings and one oil scraper ring.
6. The camshaft is driven by a chain from the crankshaft and controls the rocker arms through the pushrods. The intake and exhaust valves are closed by a single spring and move in guides that are pressed into the cylinder head. The valves are actuated directly by rocker arms.
7. The engine uses a semi-hermetic crankcase ventilation system; crankcase gases are sucked out of the valve cover through a hose, and then, passing through the air filter, enter the intake manifold.
8. Lubrication is supplied to the system by an oil pump installed in the crankcase, driven by the camshaft. Engine oil is supplied through a flow-through filter installed outside the engine into the lubrication channels, and then to the crankshaft, camshaft and rocker arm bearings (see illustration).

The oil pump includes a bypass valve.
Repair operations performed without removing the engine from the vehicle
9. The following work can be performed without removing the engine from the vehicle:
- Removal and installation the cylinder head.
- Removal and installation the drive cover, chain and sprockets.
- Removal and installation the pallet.
- Removal and installation of connecting rods, pistons and liners*.
- Removal, overhaul and installation of the oil pump.
- Replacing crankshaft seals.
- Replacing engine mounts.
- Removal and installation the flywheel.

*Theoretically, pistons and connecting rods can be removed directly in the engine compartment (after removing the cylinder head and oil pan). However, this is not recommended, as such procedures are much easier and safer (from the point of view of the risk of damaging components) perform on a removed engine (see Part F of this Section).
