Removal



1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Disconnect the hose and wiring from the fuel level sensor (see Chapter 10).

2. Transfer the fuel from the tank to a suitable container.

3. Jack up the car and place it on axle stands. Remove the exhaust system and, where applicable, the center section heat shield as described in Chapter 17. On models with ABS and/or an open beam rear axle, the rear exhaust system cannot be removed; in this case, remove the outlet pipe and the central part.

4. Disconnect the handbrake cables from the equalizer. Release the cables from the fasteners and move them to the side.

5. Disconnect the filler pipe from the fuel tank. Also disconnect the breather and ventilation hoses (see illustration).

6. Disconnect the outlet hose from the fuel filter.

7. Ask an assistant to support the fuel tank. Remove the five mounting bolts and lower the tank. Disconnect any remaining cables or hoses and remove the tank from under the vehicle (see illustration).

8. The tank is made of plastic. If damaged, replace it. Special repair kits are available for sale.

Installation



9. Install in reverse order. Adjust the handbrake as described in Section 1.
