Attention! A detailed description of the procedure for removing and installing the starter is given for vehicles with engines E7J, K7M, F3R, F7R, F8Q and F9Q. Differences for vehicles with 1.4-71.6 liter K4J/K4M petrol engines are listed at the end of the chapter. In any case, disconnect the battery before starting work.
1. Disconnect the wire terminal from the battery «masses» (-).
Attention! This removes the recorded information from some devices, and the security code from the radio, as well as all automatic settings on the radio. Therefore, before disconnecting the battery, read the chapter «Battery - removal and installation».
2. Remove, if present, the starter heat shield by unscrewing bolts C (see illustration).
20.2 Remove, if present, the starter heat shield by unscrewing bolts C
Vehicles with 150 hp engine
3. Unscrew bolts of an arm of a final collector.
4. Unscrew bolts E of fastening of a back arm of a starter (see illustration).
20.4 Unscrew the bolts F fastening the rear bracket of the starter
5. Unscrew the bolts G of the starter rear bracket (see illustration).
20.5 Unscrew the bolts G of the rear bracket of the starter
6. Unscrew the bolts H of the cover I of the fuel lines (see illustration 20.5).
All engines
7. Disconnect on the back side of a starter from the plug 30 a wire of thick section of giving of positive potential, and from the plug 50 a thin wire to the ignition lock.
8. Remove the three starter mounting bolts (see illustration). At the same time, mark the mounting position of the centering sleeve B with a marker. For vehicles with a 1.4-liter and 1.6-liter engine, this sleeve is located at point Y in the bolt hole, and for vehicles with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine and a diesel engine - in point Z (see illustration 20.8).
20.8 Remove the three starter mounting bolts
9. Remove the starter by pushing it up.
Installation
10. Make sure centering sleeve B is in place.
11. Install the starter and secure it with rattling bolts.
12. Connect electrical wires to the starter terminals.
13. Cars with a 150 hp petrol engine. Install the starter rear bracket and fuel line cover with bolts.
14. Cars with a 150 hp gasoline engine. Install the exhaust manifold bracket.
15. Attach the heat shield, if applicable.
16. Connect wire terminal «masses» (-) to the battery terminal.
17. Set the clock and program the radio to receive radio stations.
Vehicles with 1.4-/1.6-liter petrol engines K4J/K4M
18. Mark the position of the right front wheel on the hub with paint. This will allow the assembly to set the balanced wheel in its original position.
19. Loosen the wheel bolts. In this case, the car must be on the ground.
20. Install the front of the car on the goats and remove the front wheel.
21. Remove, if necessary, the right wheel arch liner.
22. Remove, if necessary, the engine mudguard.
23. Remove the clamping pin from the right drive shaft.
24. Unscrew bolts of fastening of the lower part of an amortization rack on a rotary fist.
25. Take a rotary fist downwards, having disconnected a half shaft.
26. Remove the air filter resonator in front of the filter.
27. Unscrew the nut 3 of the wiring harness clamp and disconnect the plug 4 (see illustration).
20.27 Unscrew the nut 3 of the wiring harness clamp and disconnect the plug 4
28. Unscrew the bolts of the heat-reflecting shield B and the lower bolt of the carrier frame C (see illustration 20.27).
29. Unscrew the engine oil level sensor.
30. Unscrew bolts And fastenings of a starter and remove a starter.
The starter is installed in the reverse order of removal.
If the starter does not turn, you must first check whether there is a voltage of at least 8 volts on terminal 50 of the traction relay, which is necessary to start the engine. If less voltage is applied to terminal 50, then the wires related to the starter circuit must be checked from the electrical diagram.
Whether the starter gear engages under normal voltage can be checked as follows:
31. Remove the starter and connect it with auxiliary wires to the car battery.
32. Bridge with auxiliary wire (section not less than 4 mm2) between starter terminals 30 and 50.
If at the same time the starter gear engages, then the wires going to the starter are faulty, for example, the wire is broken «masses» (-) or wire terminal (+) Corroded or defective ignition switch.
