Attention! When the battery wire terminals are disconnected, data is deleted from the memory of the following blocks and devices:
- from the control unit of the injection system, the so-called «acquired» data on the operation of the engine during the operation preceding the disconnection of the battery. This is, for example, an individual idle speed setting. After connecting the battery, the engine may experience some malfunctions for a short time (jerking, misfiring on acceleration or rough running);
- the security code that prevents unauthorized operation of the receiver, as well as settings on the radio stations, is removed from the radio. If the code is unknown, then the radio can be put into operation only with the help of a representative of the manufacturer.
In order to prevent the deletion of the mentioned data in the workshops, the so-called «memorable» wire. This wire is powered by a 9V battery and is connected to the cigarette lighter. The wire can be purchased at a car dealer or made independently.
SCENIC cars. Due to the fact that the battery is located in the cabin under the passenger seat, there is a positive terminal from the battery in the engine compartment. This terminal is located on the right side of the engine compartment before attaching the upper suspension strut support to the mudguard (see arrow in illustration 13.0).
13.0 Battery outlet in the engine compartment
The battery is connected to the output by a wire and the entire on-board network is powered from this output. If during work it is necessary to disconnect the battery, then this must be done at the terminal, and not at the battery. The battery terminal is also used to charge it without removing it, or when starting the engine from an auxiliary battery.
Removing
Attention! Before disconnecting the battery, make sure that all current consumers of the on-board network are turned off.
All vehicles except SCENIC
1. Open the hood.
2. Remove the right part A of the fairing grille (see illustration). To do this, unscrew the bolts B, release the grid in the center C, and then remove by lifting the detached end.
13.2 Remove the right part A of the fairing grille
3. Disconnect the power wire terminals from the battery poles. First disconnect terminal 1 of the wire «masses» (-) with green clamp nut and then positive terminal 2 with red clamp nut (see illustration).
13.3 Disconnect the terminals of the power wires from the battery poles
4. Unscrew nut A, remove clamp and battery (see illustration 13.3).
SCENIC cars
The SCENIC battery is located under the front passenger seat.
5. Press both levers A and lift up in front of the passenger seat (see illustration).
13.5 Press both levers A and lift up in front of the passenger seat. Left lever A is not visible in the illustration
6. Loosen handles B and lift up the seat travel bar (see illustration 13.5).
7. Tilt the passenger seat back.
8. Turn locks C 1/4 turn to the left with a screwdriver (see illustration).
13.8 Turn locks C 1/4 turn to the left with a screwdriver
9. Lift cover 1 and remove it (see illustration 13.8).
10. Unscrew the two nuts securing the battery, disconnect the holders and remove the battery.
Installation
Attention! When replacing the battery with a new original, it should be replaced with the same type. This applies especially to SCENIC vehicles.
11. Clean the battery poles with a brass wire brush.
12. Replace the battery and secure it with the clamp or holders.
Attention! Before connecting the battery, make sure that all current consumers of the on-board network are turned off. Otherwise, sparking and damage to electrical equipment may occur. Check contacts and wire fit «masses» (-). High transfer currents, especially when starting the engine, lead to overloads of the electronic control units and can cause damage to them.
13. Connect the positive wire terminal to the positive pole first (+) potential, and then the wire terminal- «masses» (-).
Attention! An incorrectly connected battery can cause serious damage to the generator and the electrical system as a whole. To prevent corrosion of the battery poles, lubricate the terminals with special grease or Vaseline.
All models except SCENIC cars
14. Replace the fairing grille and secure it.
SCENIC cars
15. Replace the battery cover and secure it. The leashes for securing the lid are fixed in position F.
16. Return the seat to its normal position and tighten the bolts securing the trailing arm to move the seat.
17. Make sure levers A (see illustration 13.5) fixed.
18. Set the clock.
19. Enter the code into the radio and set it to receive radio stations.
20. Cars with central locking. Lock and unlock the doors with the remote control after connecting the battery to disable the anti-theft device.
Maintenance free batteries
MEGANE cars are equipped as standard with a virtually maintenance-free battery.
Occasionally, as part of maintenance, distilled water must be added to the cells of these batteries, as well as some actions to care for it.
Attention! The battery in SCENIC vehicles does not require maintenance. Adding distilled water to these batteries is not possible because the cover is not removable.
The battery cover has a vent (gas outlet) hole. To prevent electrolyte from leaking out of the battery through this hole, the battery must not be tilted more than 45°.
You can use a conventional charger or a quick charger to charge the battery.
When using an electronic charger, the battery can remain in the vehicle or disconnected. The charger electronics prevent voltage spikes.
A discharged battery should only be charged with one electronic charger. When charging with a conventional charger or boost charger, the initial charge current is too high and may damage or destroy the battery.
When the electrolyte level in the cells falls, it is necessary to add distilled water.
If the vehicle is not in use, the battery should be recharged once every six weeks.
If the car is parked for more than 6 weeks, the battery should be removed and stored charged. The most favorable storage temperature is from 0°С to +27°С. At these temperatures, the battery is the least discharged. It is necessary to charge the battery no later than after 3 months of storage. Otherwise, the battery will become unusable.
Clean the battery terminals regularly and lubricate them with protective grease.
An auxiliary battery should only be used as an exception, because in this case a discharged battery is exposed to high currents.
Attention! Do not operate the auxiliary battery without running the starter.
