Traction relay — checking, removal and installation (Renault Scenic 1)

If the traction relay is faulty, the starter pinion is not attracted to the flywheel ring gear, and as a result, the starter cannot turn the engine crankshaft. This fault occurs quite often, although the starter electric motor itself is in good condition. The traction relay is a small cylindrical part located next to the starter electric motor.

Examination

1. Remove the starter and retest it by connecting it to a separate charged battery. A jump starter cable from an auxiliary battery can be used as a power cable.

2. Connect the thick section starter wire to the positive terminal of the battery and the starter housing to the negative terminal of the battery.

3. Briefly connect the terminal with the large cross-section wire attached from the positive pole (+) of the battery and the terminal with the thin wire going to the ignition switch with an auxiliary wire. The starter gear should move forward (you will hear clicks), and the starter itself - to start. If the starter pinion does not come forward, then remove the traction relay from the starter and replace it with a new one.

If during this test the starter pinion moves forward but the starter motor does not start, the starter motor should be taken to a workshop for rebuilding.

Removal

4. Disconnect the starter wire from the traction relay.

5. Unscrew the two bolts securing the traction relay and remove the relay.

Installation

6. Seal the joint F with a suitable sealant (see illustration).





7. Install the traction relay into the fork drive lever and secure with bolts.

8. Connect the wire to the traction relay.

9. Check the starter for proper operation by following the steps listed above.

10. Reinstall the starter.
