During emergency braking of the car, it is necessary to strive to achieve two goals at the same time: shortening the braking distance and maintaining the controllability and stability of the car. The likelihood of loss of directional control and lateral stability of the vehicle due to wheel lock depends on the type of road surface, weather conditions and your actions on the controls. Auto-lock braking system (ABS) designed to reduce this likelihood and improve the vehicle's active safety.
Increased driving safety is achieved due to the fact that ABS prevents the wheels from locking when braking, even if the driver presses the brake pedal too hard. This allows you to control the direction of the vehicle using the steering wheel. In the process of emergency braking, the driver can avoid the obstacle that has arisen and avoid a collision. In addition, ABS provides a shorter stopping distance when one or more wheels hit areas of low grip on the road (wet, slippery or uneven road surface).
Although the anti-lock braking system allows you to steer the vehicle with confidence during braking, you must pay attention to the road surface and take into account traffic conditions when choosing a speed. Normal driving rules should be followed, such as maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front. The fact that your car can provide high traffic safety does not mean that you can take unreasonable risks.
If one of the ABS units turns out to be faulty, this will be signaled by a control lamp on the dashboard. In this case, braking will occur as if your car does not have an auto-lock system.
When the ABS is activated, you will feel some pulsation of effort on the brake pedal. These sensations will tell you that the traction of the wheels has reached its limit and you need to adjust your driving style in accordance with the road conditions.
Attention! The change in braking torques of the wheels, automatically carried out by the anti-lock braking system, does not depend on the effort that you apply to the brake pedal. In the event of emergency braking, press the brake pedal with constant force, without worrying about periodically releasing the wheels.
