Attention! Be sure to familiarize yourself with the safety precautions regarding work on the airbag system.
Removing
1. Disconnect the wire terminal from the battery «masses» (-), and insulate the battery terminal. Read the chapter requirements first «Battery - removal and installation».
2. Wait after disconnecting the wire terminal «masses» (-) from the battery before removing the steering wheel. This time is necessary for the capacitors of the airbag and seat belt control unit to discharge.
3. Unscrew the two screws securing the airbag unit on the back of the steering wheel and tilt the unit to the side (see illustration).
19.3 Unscrew the two screws securing the airbag unit on the back of the steering wheel and fold the unit to the side
4. Disconnect on the rear side of the unit, first the white plug I, and then the plug 2 of the horn (see illustration 19.3).
5. Remove the airbag unit and place it with the steering wheel plate up.
6. Install the steering wheel so that the wheels are straight ahead. Remove the key from the ignition lock and fix the steering shaft.
7. Fix the contact block (ring) under the steering wheel with tape in the neutral position. The unit rotates with the steering wheel and supplies voltage to the airbag unit.
8. Disconnect plug D of the airbag from the contact block (see illustration). For vehicles with an on-board computer, additionally disconnect the power plug of the computer control unit on the steering wheel.
19.8 Disconnect plug D of the airbag from the contact block. The illustration shows the contact block after removing the steering wheel
9. Unscrew the steering wheel mounting bolt with a T50 socket for Togh bolts.
10. Mark the position of the steering wheel on the shaft with paint or scriber.
11. Remove the steering wheel. If necessary, hit it from below with your palms and.
Attention! The steering shaft must not be hit with a hard object. Do not remove or install the steering wheel with tools. Be careful not to damage the wire when removing the wheel.
Installation
12. Determine the neutral position of the contact block, if it was not fixed with adhesive tape when removing the steering wheel. To do this, turn grip 3 on block 2 to the right until sufficient resistance is felt (see illustration). Then turn the grip to the left, counting the turns. Divide the resulting number of revolutions by two and turn the block back by the value obtained after dividing. If there are labels 1 on the block, then they must match.
19.12 Turn grip 3 on pulley 2 to the right until sufficient resistance is felt. The illustration shows a block of a different car, not MEGANE
Attention! Do not twist the contact block. Installing it incorrectly can cause the airbag to fail.
13. Install the steering wheel and contact block. The marks made before removal must match.
14. Remove the tape from the contact block.
15. Be sure to replace the steering wheel mounting bolt with a new one. The bolt has a special layer and can be tightened with the required force only once. Tighten the steering wheel bolt with a torque wrench to 45 Nm.
Examination
Attention! RENAULT recommends that the safety system be checked with the XR Bag before installing the airbag (Ele 1288).
16. Connect the wire terminal to the battery «masses» (-). The airbag warning light on the instrument panel should come on for a few seconds with the white plug disconnected and then go on to flash.
17. Turn off the ignition.
18. Connect the XR Bag tester to the white plug (Ele 1288).
19. Turn on the ignition. The airbag warning light should come on for a few seconds and then turn off. Wait one minute and check that the light goes out and does not come back on. This means that the airbag electronics are normal and the airbag can be installed.
20. Switch off ignition and disconnect the control and measuring device.
21. Install the airbag unit in place and connect the white plug.
22. Connect the plug of the sound signal and the on-board computer (if available).
23. Fix the block of an airbag with screws, acting from the back side of a steering wheel. Screw tightening torque 5 Nm.
24. Set the clock and enter the security code into the radio.
Attention! If in doubt about the correct centering of the slip ring, contact a RENAULT workshop and remove and reinstall the steering wheel there.
