To check for a spark, unscrew the spark plugs, put the tips of the high voltage wires on them and bring them to «mass» (-). In this case, the tip or candle should not be held in the hand. They must be held with well-isolated pliers. Have an assistant start the engine.
Attention! Fuel injection is not allowed to avoid catalytic converter damage, so the fuel pump relay must be disconnected before starting. If the candles do not produce a spark, then the defect should be sought, guided by the chapter «Ignition system».
For vehicles with a diesel engine, check the preheating and fuel systems.
The engine starts poorly or does not start at all
Incorrect actions when starting the engine
Gasoline engines
Depress the clutch. Set the automatic transmission to position P or N. Turn on the starter. At the same time, do not press the accelerator pedal. As soon as the engine starts, release the ignition key. When starting a cold engine, start driving immediately after the engine starts. It is allowed to warm up the engine for about 30 seconds after starting only in severe frosts. At temperatures below -20°C, turn on the ignition, wait for the anti-theft system to turn off, and then start the engine.
Attention! When power off (disconnected battery, defective fuse, etc.) doors must be opened with the remote control before starting the engine.
Attention! Frequent attempts to start the engine can damage the catalyst because unburned fuel gets into it and, if heated, can cause an explosion.
Diesel engines
0 When starting a cold engine, turn on preheating and as soon as the warm-up indicator lamp goes out, depress the clutch or set the automatic transmission to position P or N. As soon as the indicator lamp goes out, start the engine without pressing the accelerator pedal and release the ignition key as as soon as the engine starts. When starting a warm engine, preheating is not necessary. The engine can be started immediately.
Faulty ignition system
Cars with a gasoline engine
Check the ignition system.
Faulty preheating system
Diesel vehicles
Check the preheat system.
Fuel system defective or dirty
Check the fuel system.
Starter turns too slowly
Charge the battery. Check starter.
Compression pressure too low
Check and adjust valve clearances. Check the condition of the valves. Replace cylinder head gasket or rebuild engine
Valve timing incorrectly set
Check ignition timing. Replace toothed belt.
