37. Clean the release bearing and apply a thin coat of molybdenum grease to the input shaft spline.
38. Make sure that the alignment pins C for centering the position of the engine and gearbox relative to each other are in place and seated correctly.
1.38 Check that the dowel pins C for centering the position of the engine and gearbox relative to each other are in place and seated correctly
39. Get the gearbox into the engine compartment and, holding it in a horizontal position, bring the input shaft of the gearbox into the clutch. If the input shaft of the gearbox does not engage with the clutch disc, then move the gearbox back a little and rotate the input shaft so that the splines of the shaft and the clutch disc are joined. Make sure that the centering pins are in place.
Engine and gearbox connection
40. Screw in pins A and B (see illustration 1.31).
41. Insert the engine and gearbox mounting bolts into the holes and tighten them to the prescribed torque. The tightening torque for M10 bolts is 45 Nm and for M12 bolts is 55 Nm.
42. Tighten the nuts of the engine and transmission mounts, but do not completely tighten.
43. Adjust the position of the power block by rocking it from side to side so that it stands without tension, and tighten all bolts and nuts with the necessary torque.
44. Screw the anti-roll bar mounts to the gearbox with a force of 65 Nm and to the carrier frame with a tightening of 75 Nm.
45. Tighten the bolts of the box suspension bracket with a force of 45 Nm.
46. Connect the exhaust pipe of the mufflers to the exhaust manifold, replacing its old sealing gasket with a new one.
47. Replace the starter.
48. Fasten the tachometer drive shaft to the gearbox.
49. Connect the power wire to the reversing light switch.
50. Connect the gear selector rod and put on the protective collar.
Attention! If the stem was disconnected at the place where the fork clamp was attached, then the gearshift mechanism should be adjusted.
51. Connect the racks between the transverse and trailing arms on each side of the car: Tighten the mounting bolts with a force of 30 Nm.
52. Replace the protective shield of the clutch,
53. Fasten the clutch cable to the gearbox and check the operation of the cable tension regulator.
54. Replace the power steering pipe holder.
55. Reinstall the wheel drive axles.
56. Replace the front wheel brake calipers.
Attention! After installing the calipers, depress the brake pedal several times so that the pistons of the wheel cylinders reach and lie against the brake shoes.
57. Fill the gearbox with gear oil.
58. Install those front wheels in accordance with the labels applied during removal. Before doing this, lubricate the seat of the wheel disk on the hub axle and the cone of the wheel bolts with a thin layer of grease. Do not lubricate the threads of the wheel bolts.
59. Bolt the wheel and lower the car.
60. Tighten the bolts in a cross pattern with a torque of 90 Im.
61. Connect wire terminal «masses» (-) to the negative pole of the battery.
62. Set the clock and, if necessary, enter the security code into the radio.
Notes and tightening torques for screw fittings on vehicles with a 1.4-/1.6-litre petrol engine (K4J/K4M)
63. Disconnect the wiring harness from the carrier frame on the left side.
64. Unscrew on the right side of the carrier frame and on the rear side of the steering gear the bolt of the power steering pipeline.
65. Remove the heat shield mounting bolts under the shift lever support.
66. Disconnect, if necessary, the return springs and gear shift rods.
67. Unscrew the bolt securing the 1st gear selection rod (see illustration).
1.67 Remove the bolt securing the 1st gear selection rod
68. Loosen nut 2 (see illustration 1.67). Do not unscrew the nut completely.
69. Unscrew the nut 3 and remove the bolt from the pendulum support (see illustration 1.67).
Recommendations for dismantling the gearbox with lowering it down
70. Unscrew the lower mounting bolts 4, as well as the right upper bolt 5 of the steering mechanism (see illustration 1.67).
71. Fix the steering gear with wire and unscrew the bolt 6 (see illustration 1.67).
72. Block the steering wheel and unscrew the bolt of the steering shaft cross connecting the shaft and the steering mechanism.
73. Disconnect the horn.
74. Unscrew bolts of fastening of a back part of a bearing frame to a body.
75. Remove the starter, see the relevant chapter.
76. Support the carrier frame with a RENAULT trolley, unscrew the remaining mounting bolts and lower it together with the gearbox.
77. Disconnect the gearbox from the engine.
